Position Summary

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The Health Sciences Laboratory Assistant (For Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technician and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Programs) supports faculty and students, within one or more Health Sciences program areas, by maintaining the College's laboratories and workshops installation, demonstration, and trouble-shooting of equipment and facilities. The Laboratory Assistant sets up the lab in preparation for experiments, and maintain supplies and documentations.

Requirements

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

- Minimum Bachelor Degree in the relevant discipline
- Preference will be given to candidates with Industrial experience, in a relevant medical laboratory field.
- Membership to a relevant internationally-recognized professional association is desirable.
- Training certificates or diplomas in workshop practices is desirable.
- First Aid qualification is desirable.
- A completed apprenticeship leading to certification in a professional trade would be advantageous

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

- A minimum of 3 year of experience in a role related to setup and maintenance of laboratories is required.
- Knowledge of instruments and devices, relevant devices used within the laboratory, and other workshop tools and equipment
- Strong Installation, Maintenance, troubleshooting and technical problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety protocols
- A high degree of computer literacy and demonstrated ability to integrate technology in the workplace
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated competency to interact with people at all levels of the organization
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multi-cultural environment and to cope with pressure in a positive manner while working to deadlines within a busy and demanding environment
- A demonstrated willingness to engage in professional development activities in order to develop and improve new and current skills, and to adapt to the evolving needs of the organization
- Knowledge of electronics and electrical systems is desirable (when applicable).

LANGUAGE

Fluency in written and spoken English is essential

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Maintains a schedule of preventative maintenance for all equipment and keeps adequate manuals and maintenance logs for equipment and parts.
- Demonstrate the use of machines, tools and equipment within the lab.
- Maintain consumable materials store and ensures adequate inventory levels for supplies.
- Maintains systems and procedures to track borrowed equipment and tools
- Observes and reinforces safety and housekeeping procedures and protocol within the laboratory
- Contributes to the development of the HCT by observing and implementing college and system-wide policies and procedures, and by participating in extra-curricular activities and community events
- Travels to other HCT colleges to attend meetings, workshops and conferences as required
- Develops an awareness of and respect for the customs and cultures of HCT students and employees
-Aids staff and students in the purchasing procedures with regards of equipment and parts for student projects.
- Coordination with other Health Sciences Programs.
- Follows through the financial aspects with the finance department concerning purchases for projects
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Program Chair.
